Meet Laila Jacobs from Bo-Kaap, Cape Town, a student at Gardens Commercial High School. Laila began her MOT journey in Grade 8, 2022, and today, she shares how MOT has shaped her into a confident young woman.
Here is Laila’s story:
“I have always been a shy and introverted person, but I’ve also loved challenging myself by doing things that scare me, like public speaking or performing. When I started the MOT Programme, I learned the three MOT sayings: the courage to live, the courage to care, and the courage to say no. These values have stayed with me ever since.
There was a moment in my life when I found myself in a situation where I felt unsafe and uncomfortable. I knew I needed to speak up and protect myself. It was difficult, but I remembered the MOT values—especially the courage to say no. Even though the other person tried to pressure me, I kept expressing my discomfort and saying no until they stopped.
That experience taught me the power of my voice and the importance of standing up for myself. It wasn’t easy, but it showed me that saying no is a strong and necessary choice. Today, I can confidently say that I have the courage to say no, and I carry that with me in every aspect of my life.
Since then, I have also become a Young MOTivator, a role where I get to support and guide other young people through the MOT Programme. As a Young MOTivator, I help my peers build confidence, make positive choices, and develop their own courage to live, care, and say no. It’s been an amazing way to give back and make a difference in my school and community.”
By remembering her voice and embracing the MOT value of the courage to say no, Laila stood up for herself and continues to inspire others. Thank you for sharing your story of Courage, Laila!
