MOT South Africa hosted its second MOT Coaches’ Basic Education for the year! The training focused on equipping educators to support Robust Youth aged 16–35 at TVET Colleges, with a strong emphasis on mental well-being, resilience, and life skills.

Educators from different parts of the country came together with a shared goal: to better understand and support the young people they work with every day.

Bringing TVET Colleges Together

We were proud to host our partnering colleges, Port Elizabeth TVET College and Umfolozi TVET College, who travelled to Cape Town to join False Bay TVET College, College of Cape Town, and West Coast TVET College.

Having educators from multiple TVET Colleges in one space created valuable opportunities for shared learning. Coaches exchanged experiences, reflected on challenges faced by young people in the TVET environment, and explored practical ways to strengthen support for students both inside and outside the classroom.

Strategic Partnerships for Youth Empowerment

This MOT Coaches’ Basic Education forms part of a partnership with DG Murray Trust (DGMT) that began in 2024, following a call for MOT South Africa to extend its reach beyond the Western and Eastern Cape. Through this partnership, MOT SA began working with TVET Colleges in Durban, Port Elizabeth, and Johannesburg, with the aim of strengthening educators and expanding the reach of the MOT Programme.

Since the start of this partnership, MOT SA has steadily grown its footprint at TVET Colleges, ensuring that more young people have access to life-skills support that helps them navigate challenges, build resilience, and make positive choices.

What the MOT Coaches Shared

Feedback from the MOT Coaches highlighted the personal and professional value of the training. Many described the experience as eye-opening and meaningful, with several noting how it shifted their thinking about their role as educators.

One MOT Coach shared, “The training really made me reflect on myself and how I show up for students.”

These reflections showed how the MOT Coaches’ Basic Education supported educators to reconnect with their purpose and strengthen the way they engage with young people.

Thank You, DG Murray Trust

MOT South Africa would like to thank DG Murray Trust (DGMT) for making this training possible and for continuing to invest in the well-being of young people.

Their support enabled MOT SA to build strong partnerships with TVET Colleges and expand the reach of the MOT Programme. As this work continues, the commitment of MOT Coaches, partner institutions, and funding partners like DGMT will help create lasting, positive change in the lives of young people across South Africa.

The Role of a MOT Coach

A MOT Coach plays an important role in facilitating MOT life-skills sessions for young people aged 16–35, focused on the Courage to Live, Courage to Care, and Courage to Say No.

MOT Coaches support students to better understand themselves, develop resilience, and build the confidence needed to face everyday challenges. Becoming a MOT Coach requires a commitment to MOT’s values: Passionate, Youthful, Innovative, and Sincere (P-YIS).

Educators interested in joining or becoming a MOT Coach can contact training@mot.org.za or give us a call at 021 696 6610.
