8 August 2026 | PBIRC
On 8 August 2026, educators and staff from Bonteheuwel High School participated in a MOT Whole-School Staff Engagement Workshop at PBIRC. The workshop provided an opportunity for staff members to connect with one another, reflect on the realities facing young people, and explore how a united school community can play a meaningful role in supporting learner wellbeing and development.
The day began with a series of interactive activities aimed at building connection, trust, and psychological safety among participants. Through discussions and reflection exercises, staff members explored the challenges faced by learners both inside and outside the classroom, including issues such as poverty, anxiety, peer pressure, family instability, and other social realities that can impact learning and personal growth. Participants also reflected on the challenges educators face and the importance of collective support within a school environment.
A central focus of the workshop was the MOT “River and Bridge” philosophy, which illustrates the importance of preventive and relationship-based approaches to youth development. Through activities such as the Rebuilding the Bridge Challenge, staff members experienced first-hand how collaboration, communication, and shared responsibility are essential in creating supportive environments where learners can thrive. The workshop reinforced the message that every adult in the school community plays a part in building stronger bridges for young people.
These sessions encouraged staff to share personal experiences, reflect on MOT’s core values of Courage to Care, Courage to Live, and Courage to Say No, and develop greater empathy for both colleagues and learners. Through these experiences, staff were reminded of the importance of seeing the person behind the role and recognising the hidden challenges that individuals may carry.
Teamwork and collaboration were further explored through activities such as the Blind Square Challenge and Ship Exercise, which highlighted the importance of communication, trust, and collective leadership within a school. Discussions focused on how educators, school leaders, support staff, and MOT Coaches can work together more effectively to create a positive and supportive learning environment.
The workshop concluded with reflections on resilience, personal wellbeing, and commitment to action. Staff members identified practical ways in which they could contribute to strengthening school culture and supporting learner wellbeing. The closing activity reinforced the message that building positive school communities is a shared responsibility and that every act of care, support, and encouragement contributes to creating stronger outcomes for young people.
