MOT SA and the Rotary Club of Wynberg Launch – Courage to Care Global Grant

MOT South Africa, in proud partnership with the Rotary Club of Wynberg, Karmøy Rotary Club, Haugaland Upper Secondary School, and Rotary Districts 2250 and 9350, together with support from the Rotary Foundation, recently celebrated the launch of the Courage to Care Global Grant project in Cape Town.

The launch event brought together a wide range of key stakeholders from across the community. Educators, school leaders, local police, parents, community representatives, and project partners gathered to mark the start of this next phase, highlighting the shared commitment to uplifting young people and building safer, stronger communities.

What the Courage to Care Project Is About

The Courage to Care project is a values-driven initiative aimed at empowering young people to handle conflict, stand up against harassment, and make positive life choices.

Through the MOT programme, learners are equipped with essential life skills that encourage them to:

  • Care for others
  • Say no to drug abuse, crime, and negative peer pressure
  • Build self-confidence and resilience

The programme goes beyond learners by also engaging educators, parents, and community leaders, creating a supportive environment where young people can thrive both at school and in their communities.

How the Project Came About

This initiative builds on a long-standing relationship between the Rotary Club of Wynberg and the Rotary Club of Karmøy in Norway, who have worked together for more than 15 years in supporting schools in the Grassy Park area.

Through their ongoing involvement, it became clear that while infrastructure support is important, the deeper challenges facing learners are social, ranging from gangsterism and substance abuse to unstable home environments and lack of positive role models.

The first Courage to Care Global Grant project in 2020 successfully introduced the MOT programme to three high schools: Zeekoevlei, Fairmount and Lotus High School, where it contributed to a more positive school culture, improved learner engagement, and reduced levels of conflict. This success has led to the expansion of the project to reach even more young people.

Who Started and Drives the Project

The project is led through Rotary’s Global Grant programme, Rotary Club of Wynberg serving as host sponsor and Rotary Club of Karmøy) as international sponsor.

They are supported by committed teams from both Rotary clubs, working closely with MOT South Africa, who are responsible for implementing the programme on the ground.

MOT South Africa brings years of experience in youth development and plays a key role in training educators, learners, parents, and community stakeholders.

The success of the Courage to Care project relies on strong collaboration between various partners, including:

  • MOT South Africa
  • Rotary Club of Wynberg (host club)
  • Rotary Club of Karmøy (international partner)
  • Institutions in the programme: False Bay College – Khayelitsha Campus, College of Cape Town – Gugulethu Campus and Sibelius High School
  • Local police, parents, and community leaders

The launch event reflected this collaborative spirit, with stakeholders coming together to support a shared vision for the future of young people in their communities.

Project Roll-Out and Impact

The project will be implemented across selected high schools, a specialised centre supporting learners with behavioural challenges, and college campuses in Langa and Khayelitsha:

  • False Bay College – Khayelitsha Campus
  • College of Cape Town – Gugulethu Campus
  • Sibelius High School

Over the duration of the project, more than 2,500 beneficiaries are expected to be reached through training, workshops, and ongoing mentorship.

The focus remains on developing confident, resilient young people who are able to make positive choices and contribute to peaceful, supportive communities.

This marks the beginning of another important chapter in a journey focused on youth empowerment and community upliftment.

With the continued support of Rotary, MOT South Africa, educational institutions, and community stakeholders, the project aims to create lasting change, helping young people build the confidence to stand up for themselves and others, and to shape a better future for their communities.
