On 16 June 2026, Burgersdorp came alive with energy, colour, and purpose as young people, educators, partners, and community members gathered for the Voices of Courage 2026 – Eastern Cape event, hosted by MOT South Africa, in partnership with the Department of Health and proudly powered by Scatec.

A March to Remember

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the Voices of Courage March, as hundreds of young people took to the streets of Burgersdorp, walking together in solidarity, celebration, and reflection.

What made the march so powerful was not only the movement itself, but the energy behind it, the singing, dancing, conversations, and banners proudly created by the young people themselves. There was a real sense of pride in being part of something bigger, as the community came together to honour Youth Day and celebrate the power of young voices. The march set the tone for everything that followed, grounding the day in lived experience and COURAGE.

Adding to the vibrant atmosphere of the march were the creative posters and banners designed by the young people themselves in the days leading up to the event. Using their own words, ideas, and artistic expression, participants created powerful messages that reflected their hopes, values, and visions for a better future.

From calls for unity and kindness to messages about courage, leadership, and positive change, each poster served as a reminder that young people have important perspectives to share. Seeing these messages displayed proudly throughout the streets of Burgersdorp gave the march an even deeper sense of purpose and ownership.

The posters quickly became one of the most talked-about elements of the day, sparking conversations among participants and community members alike. More than just colourful displays, they represented the voices of young people being boosted in a meaningful and visible way.

Participants arrived at the Town Hall to a warm welcome and an uplifting performance that carried the spirit of the march into the programme. Throughout the day, young people were encouraged to pause and reflect on the significance of 16 June, not only as a commemoration of the past, but as a reminder of the responsibility, resilience, and opportunities that lie ahead.

panel discussion

One of the highlights of the programme was the Intergenerational Panel Discussion, which brought together different generations to share their experiences and perspectives on leadership, courage, and creating positive change. The discussion featured two MOT principals alongside a Young MOTivator, creating a meaningful conversation that bridged generations and reminded young people that wisdom, lived experience, and fresh ideas are all essential in building stronger communities.

The panel encouraged participants to believe in their own potential, learn from those who have gone before them, and recognise that every generation has a role to play in shaping a brighter future.

Courage in Action

One of the most meaningful moments of the day was the Courage Tree and Pledge Ceremony, where young people were invited to write down their personal commitments, hopes, and declarations of courage.

It was a powerful shift from reflection to action, a moment where words became intention, and intention became promise.

Voices of Courage was a reminder that when young people come together, their voices carry real power.

From the streets of Burgersdorp to the Town Hall, the message was clear, young people are not only the future, they are active contributors to change right now.

Thank you to every young person, partner, educator, volunteer, and stakeholder who made this day possible. Your presence helped create something meaningful, memorable, and deeply impactful. A special thank you to the Department of Health, Scatec, SAPS and Walter Sisulu Local Municipality!
